Whether you are a New Year resolution type or not, it’s hard to resist the freshness of the start of a new year. Reflections on what went well (or didn’t) in the year that has come to a close can help inform your outlook and intentions for the months ahead. Studies have shown that the average resolution lasts less than 2 months with over 40% of people stopping after just 1 month. When I hear those statistics it makes me think the goal wasn’t all that meaningful in the first place. (Stay tuned for more on how to reflect and set up meaningful, achievable goals.). If you set a goal and need some tips on how to stay committed to it read on!
1. Break Goals into Small Steps
Big goals can feel overwhelming, so divide them into smaller, manageable tasks.
Celebrate small wins along the way to stay energized and focused.
Example: If you’re trying to form a daily habit, start by doing it 2 days a week.
2. Visualize Your Success
Take a moment each day to picture yourself achieving your goal.
Create a vision board or use a motivational wallpaper as a reminder.
Consider the WHY behind your goal. Having an emotional connection to what you are trying to achieve helps you stay focused and committed.
3. Build Habits, Not Just Motivation
Motivation can fluctuate, but habits create consistency.
Set a fixed time or routine to work on your goal daily.
Example: Walk for 20 minutes every morning, no matter what.
4. Reward Yourself
Celebrate progress with small, meaningful rewards to keep the journey enjoyable and give you something to look forward to.
5. Stay Accountable
Share your goals with a trusted friend, mentor, or group and schedule check-ins to help keep you on track.
Join communities with similar goals for encouragement and shared motivation.
